Painted after returning from a few days in Florence this is an imagined interior with its old walls and window view of Giotto’s tower. The faces are from a predella (now in the Louvre). Giotto is on the left and Brunelleschi is on the far right with Donatello and Uccello partially glimpsed in between and behind the glass. The embroidered oranges are a reminder of the orange trees to be seen both in Florentine paintings and in cloister gardens, while the three volumes are Vasari’s Lives of the Artists.

The structure of the shelving with its content of simple forms offered a contrast to the colourful, organic tulips and a solution to the extreme portrait format of the rectangle. There was some echo of the cones in the tulip heads. The tiles, seen through glass, obliged by becoming more organic too.
