I have favourite places, flowers and pieces of pottery. Putting some of these together I made this still life in four sections, on four square cradled gesso panels. I did this because it was easier to physically work on the painting that way and interesting to work on each square in rotation, and also because I felt the sectioning of the picture somehow lent itself to the idea of a window. I like working with acrylic on gesso panel because you get these wonderful crisp lines against the hard white, slightly powdery gesso base. I regularly spend time in St Ives and much of my inspiration comes from the vistas, textures, light and visual culture around me when I’m there.

I wanted to make a portrait of a very cool and knowing woman- to make it luscious, edgy, seductive (especially in color)- but that also had this message about the domestic and female sexuality. The teapot and teacup and scissors are kind of fetish objects- that they are domestic objects, but are bent over backwards, splayed and pointed. She knows this trap- the role that women still have of having to be attractive and still are doing most of the domestic work. Roles, appearance, silence, an awareness of the patriarchy and its traditional, confined roles for men and women. It is a message with pretty colors. 'A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down in the most delightful way'

At the time I was thinking of Louise Bourgeois' Femme Maison and reading Deborah Levy's Cost of Living - "To strip the wallpaper off the fairy tale of the Family House in which the comfort and happiness of men and children have been the priority is to find behind it an unthanked, unloved, neglected, exhausted woman...To not feel at home in her family home is the beginning of the bigger story of society and its female discontents."

This is a portrait of myself as my mother’s daughter. She came to live with me two years ago and died this Christmas a day after my birthday on boxing day. I was painting it as a tribute to my mother. It shows my belief that everything is inherited. I am my mothers savage daughter and will not be tamed nor my mother before me .We as artists inherit not only from our parents but other artists art builds on history and the history of art is forever moving forward. I found an Edwardian immortelle grave ornament in a Welsh churchyard. Usually comprising of unglazed white porcelain flowers and symbols, I visualised Shakespeare’s iconic Ophelia as deserving of such a tribute, as translated the name `immortelle` means `everlasting`.

Painted after returning from a few days in Florence this is an imagined interior with its old walls and window view of Giotto’s tower. The faces are from a predella (now in the Louvre). Giotto is on the left and Brunelleschi is on the far right with Donatello and Uccello partially glimpsed in between and behind the glass. The embroidered oranges are a reminder of the orange trees to be seen both in Florentine paintings and in cloister gardens, while the three volumes are Vasari’s Lives of the Artists.

I began by painting the canvas a base of warm pink acrylic, onto which I mapped out the main lines and shapes with dark purple oil and cold wax, focussing on tonal value and contrast. Over this framework I worked loosely and boldly with oil pigment bars, focussing on free mark-making and pattern, in the knowledge that most of this layer would be hidden by future layers, but that elements would be retained and revealed. Onto this base I applied oil and cold wax, in masked off bands and geometric shapes, giving the painting structure and a definite form, but endeavouring to retain some of those earlier loose marks. As I built up the layers I constantly scratched back to reveal earlier layers, also providing textural interest. I applied the paint with a mixture of palette knives, silicon tools, brushes and rollers.
