My very large book on Vermeer does not sit neatly on my bookshelf. A narrow strip of the cover illustration is always tantalizingly visible. I decided to use the strip as part of the background to a still life group. Over the weeks the strip became wider and the flower became less full as it decayed; consequently, more and more of the girl’s face was revealed. The timeless gaze contrasts with the passing and decay of the natural world but links with the continuity of the new life expressed in the rose hip.
