The second in a series of narrative paintings based on sketches of my son while in hospital. I have had the opportunity to sketch William for many hours during his regular treatments. This visual diary has created interesting compositional possibilities for paintings, allowing me to move away from traditional portrait formats and explore poses which reflect the intimacy of our time together in hospital.

This is the first of a series of narrative paintings based on sketches made of my eldest son while he receives regular treatment for a chronic illness in hospital. I wanted this painting to convey the complex emotions we both feel and which I observe during our hospital days together: sadness, resignation, bravery, pride, strength.
