Fast-fashion waste from the Global North washes up on Accra’s beaches every day in a tide of discarded textiles. This painting honours the quiet, steady courage of community initiatives and those who refuse to look away— returning again and again to lift tangled masses of clothing from the sand. Working in teams, they clear waste that should never have reached these shores, evidence of a global system that offloads its excess to places least able to bear it. Their persistence restores a measure of dignity to the beach, even knowing the next tide will bring more pollution. ‘Heroes’ pays tribute to these everyday heroes, recognising them not as victims, but as active agents holding their ground—and invites us to consider who is truly doing the work of care in a damaged world, and why they must do it at all.

Hijab Imtiaz Ali (1908–1999) was a Pakistani writer, editor and diarist. She is a well known name in Urdu literature and a pioneer of romanticism in Urdu. Hijab obtained her pilot's license in 1936. In 1939, The International Women’s News reported that Hijab had become the first Muslim woman in the British Empire to obtain an ‘A’ license as an air pilot.

Manuela was an Ecuadorian revolutionary heroine of South America who supported the revolutionary cause by gathering information, distributing leaflets and protesting for women's rights. Manuela received the Order of the Sun ("Caballeresa del Sol" or 'Dame of the Sun'), honoring her services in the revolution.

Sarah Biffin (or Biffen), (1784—1850), also known by her married name Mrs. Wright, was an artist working in the first half of the nineteenth century. Biffin was born with the condition “phocomelia”, described on her baptism record as “born without arms and legs”. She went on to train as an artist, using her mouth to draw, sew, write and paint watercolours in miniature.

I felt that the foyer building is reminiscent of a botanical glasshouse, I placed the flowers within the architecture and to connect with the musical venue I chose species which have names with musical references, and because they resemble musical instruments - Fiddle head ferns, Trumpet vines, Canterbury bells, Musical note plant, Angels trumpets, Tiarella spring symphony and Philodendron jungle Boogie Woogie.

I have always loved painting sunflowers. This painting used for reference a small sketch I had already made of a sunflower that was on the cusp of ‘turning’ . In the picture I placed it in a favourite blue mug that used to be my mother’s. I set the still life somewhere on an imagined beach in southwest Cornwall (where I regularly spend time). I often include flattened contrasting patterns and textures in paintings in a way that reflects my love of collage and enjoyment in painting and drawing detail.

This still life is an integration of images of imagined vessels and a real life pot of my own. The table and background are also partly imagined and partly painted from life. How the foreground and background interlock with each other as some sort of designed space also felt important. The work of many of the mid-century British modernists is often in my mind. The composition evolved via the painting of the two central objects and their contents. As often in my work, I wanted the background to hint at a distant horizon without being too literal. Flying birds are suggested in a morning mist, and I enjoyed making the sky a textured pattern of interlocking shapes.

'Coffee in St Ives'

Looking into St Ives harbour from the stone wall, at high tide the sea pulls itself right into the two old stone arches at the inner end of the harbour wall. Taking in the colour and texture of the wave-beaten stone and the activities along Smeaton's Pier, I made drawings and took photos of the harbour at different times of day and this painting grew out of one of those sketches. I wanted to simplify the picture by painting in the bold shapes of the arches, flattening the shape and form of the sea and just suggesting the lines of the buildings that sit around the harbour. It became a series of interlocking shapes inspired by the strong lines and colour contrasts in the scene. The mug had belonged to my mother and I liked the vivid yellow of its stripe. It also provides a foreground focus to the picture. Although the background is mainly painted, the still life element in the foreground is made up of collage and paint.
