Dame Masham was the longest serving woman member of the House of Lords. When she fell from her horse at the age of 21 her whole life changed and she was confined to her wheelchair. Instead of giving up she dedicated her life to improving life for the disabled working with the Red Cross and founding the society for spinal injuries. She died last year after sitting for this portrait. I admired her resilience in the face of difficulties. She won 10 Olympic medals.

This is a diptych. The right to protest is an important right dating back to the Magda Carter and peasants revolt in 1381 and beyond that Peterloo 1819 . Women fought for over a hundred years to get the right to vote forming the women’s Social and Political Union in 1903 and the women’s Liberation Movement in the 1970’s protesting the indignity of not having equal representation and equality of opportunity and equal pay. The rights of individuals within society the right of freedom. The right to protest even if you don’t agree is an inalienable right and a way to bring about change and to challenge the status quo’s stopping and questioning tyranny and holding governments to account.
