Godsend - Apple of Discord (Shapes of Temptation Series)

This series reclaims the age-old image of women and apples, transforming a symbol of temptation and transgression into one of knowledge, choice and defiance. Realism and abstraction interwine to explore myth, agency and transformation. Here, the myth of Eris is reimagined, and the golden apple becomes an abstract catalyst rather than a prize. Rival goddesses are reduced to mere dots and are no longer competing, hence refusing the logic of comparison altogether. In contrast, Eris is fully realised - complex, textured and embodied. Discord is framed not as destruction, but as a necessary disturbance that exposes systems of comparison, beauty, value and legitimacy.

This series reclaims the image of women and apples, transforming an age-old symbol of temptation and transgression into one of knowledge, choice and defiance. Realism and abstraction intertwine to explore myth, agency and transformation. This work positions the apple as symbolic legacy, suggesting continuity of the cultural narratives of temptation and beauty. This isn't about one Eve - it's about all of us. The circles serve as both warning sign and halo, as the figures occupy the space between icon and individual, reclaiming the apple symbol and holding it without apology.

The sun’s hum is oil on canvas (2025), painted to hold a soft, warm kind of quiet. The figure is leaning forward with her eyes lowered, and I kept the brushwork open so the surface stays breathable and human. The blue line work in oil pastel carves through the paint, pushing the background towards pattern. The artist was thinking about the feeling of settling into yourself, and the low, constant comfort of sunlight you can almost hear.

Painted in oil on canvas, the work is built over a pink ground that subtly emerges through the surface. Layers of oil paint were allowed to dry and then scraped back, while other areas were wiped away while still wet. This process creates varied textures and visible layers that evoke a sense of history, memory, and lived experience.

This painting portrays a traditionally dressed opera performer whose form breaks into intersecting blue and pink fragments. The figure becomes an abstracted presence—less a portrait and more an identity shaped by inherited roles, stylised costume, and cultural expectation. By rendering her as layered visual codes, the work reflects how women in traditional drama were both iconic and constrained, celebrated onstage yet obscured beneath the roles they were scripted to inhabit.

My friend from Montmartre, Paris. This woman, bruised and battered on the streets of Paris found a new life as a Flower Seller. Hers` is one of many stories of abuse against women throughout the world and hopefully we will hear more positive stories in the future as no woman, whatever her background, is exempt from violence.

The painting captures Reeves in the moments before delivering her first Budget in 2024. Depicting the United Kingdom’s first female Chancellor after more than 800 years of male predecessors, the painting marks a pivotal moment in British political history, as the Treasury becomes the last of the great Offices of State to be led by a woman. The Chancellor is shown rehearsing with advisers, her speech laid out before her, with the iconic red Budget box behind her and a subtle chequered motif referencing the historic origins of the Exchequer — underscoring the continued progress of women in politics. My work is intended to be a contemporary history painting, capturing a defining moment for women’s equality in British political history. I wanted to create a work which reflected both the weight of historic lineage and captured a significant first for women’s leadership and representation in UK politics. 'The Storyteller' figure holds her story in her body, in a tree, in a toy theatre, in a book. It is of being held captive in a jar and imprisoned for all to witness. Underneath is her inner child. She holds her story, she can finally tell it because there are angels around her holding her in place. I based it around the words by Carl Jung- 'No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell.'

'Tinker Tailor'- the title comes from the nursery rhyme; I am very influenced by fairy tales, nursery rhymes, children's stories. I wanted to make the figure a character- a tailor creating her own bespoke gown, like an autobiographical dress. The dress says 'raw like sushi' partly to describe herself to others, but also taken from the title of Neneh Cherry's 1989 album. The tailor is sewing and creating her own version of femininity, of magic and transformation. Her child pokes her head out at the bottom, alongside a sleeping cat.

This work memorialises a group of soldiers who feasted on poultry before leaving for the trenches of The Great War and the Somme. Each wished that his life would be spared. Not all those brave men's wishes came true. This work is a testament to the 64 men from that company whose young lives were lost. This is an interactive work, created by the artist. By making slow rotations of the frame, the entangled wishbones come to rest in a unique form. Thereby creating a new and evolving work of symbolism.

The piece was inspired by the High Peak area of the Peak District; an area not too far from where I live. I wanted to to capture the moodiness and drama of the area so the work was executed very spontaneously using large palette knives and brushes.

Soft Pastel

This painting depicts part of the deer park in the grounds of Raby Castle, Staindrop, Darlington, on a cold and misty morning in November. It is drawn using Unison soft pastels onto a light coloured Pastelmat. I wanted to capture the rich colours of the trees standing out from the mist that was fast descending onto the park. Pastel is a very versatile medium; it allows for experimenting with different mark making, exploring ways to depict the structural and tactile qualities of grass and foliage, creating and building up textures. Blocks of colour were randomly applied, using the pastel on its side. Layers are built up by either using the same colour, or a range of colours. Sometimes I like to create a crisp, clear line by using masking tape and applying and blending pastel up to the edge of that tape. Carefully removing the tape reveals a beautifully crisp line. I applied this technique to several areas of the painting.

Soft Pastel

This painting depicts a part of a scene on private land in Fir Tree, a village in County Durham. It is drawn using Unison soft pastels onto coloured Pastelmat. I’m drawn to scenes that have colour, texture and pattern in them, I like to explore ways to depict these qualities in my work and this landscape gave me the opportunity to do just that. I was struck by the strong horizontal lines created by the trees, and the undulation of the fields, both contrasting dramatically with the change of colour in the sky, which I exaggerated by heightening the colours used, especially the trees. My preferred medium of pastel allowed me to experiment with different mark making, allowing me to build up and create textures. I applied horizontal sweeps of colour to the foreground, achieved by using the pastel on its side, to create a sense of movement. Using the same technique I then layered another colour on top to add more depth. I used masking tape to create some sharp lines.

This still life explores the dynamic interplay of reflection, distortion, and texture. The copper tumbler and brass pot, with their highly polished surfaces, capture and transform the colors around them, subtly bending the shapes of the cherries and their surroundings. The five cherries, rich in hue and ripeness, offer a contrast to the metallic sheen, their deep bloom standing out against the cooler tones of the table and the dark background. The composition guides the eye naturally, with the cherry and its curved stalk at the bottom right acting as a visual entry point. Light plays a central role, emphasising the reflective nature of the objects and the way they echo and reshape the forms within the scene.

A bright yellow Manchester tram The yellow paintwork is a distinctive feature of the Manchester tram, making them easy to spot as they approach. This one dominates the bottom of the image, declaring Piccadilly as its destination. It reminds me of a previous painting Piccadilly Bound, I wonder if it’s the same one? Mosley Street is an impressive part of Manchester, with the Art Gallery one of my favourite buildings. It was the first gallery I ever went to and my first experience of art close to. You know when you sit behind a tall person in a theatre? You have to strain to see, or move from side to side. The street sign in the middle is like that person. You want to ask it to move or look to the side to see the view. You can’t do that, of course. Why do so many artists edit views by removing what they consider ugly or modern? I honestly don’t know. To me, they are as much part of the scene as the architecture. Everyday life depends on them, they guide us on our way.

St Georges Wharf - Riverside Walk

Something about this building reminds me of owls, the sloping and curved roof. The beak like outlined shape of the lower two sections. St George Wharf, Riverside Walk is on the south bank of the Thames, near Vauxhall wharf. The image used was taken from the Thames clipper on which I was cruising towards Canary Wharf. A veritable sea of green. It gives off ocean vibes, at least a marine blue palette. There’s so much to see, with curving glass walls of windows, terraces and turrets, with what must be fabulous river views. The Bridge on the left disappears off to the wharf, pristine white. It’s a familiar shape seen in bridges across the UK. Nothing special in itself, and yet something very special in its design. Simple, elegant and functional, easy to overlook, whilst simultaneously being something striking. The scale of the owl tower isn’t immediately obvious until you see the figures on the walkway. Heads just below the canopy of a cafe umbrella, those white triangles.

A rare quiet moment at a London Railway Station. A quiet station on a Friday afternoon, you can just make out two figures. The Lady in black wears a mask and carries her phone. You’ll have to take my word for that. There is another figure on the bench to the left of the escalator. Trains wait on both platforms. Everything else is quiet. Above us looms an arching glazed roof. Its metal arch is picked out in red, criss crossed with more intersections, and curved support in a confused yet, ultimately coordinated, mass of struts and joints. More glass panels fill up the end of the great arch below a series of three smaller arches define the platform areas beyond. The roof fills half of the painting, giving a sense of expansive, light space, which contrasts to the busy dark structures below and leads to the darkest spot as you head underground. All that’s visible below are the edges of steps going up on the other side. A contemporary station. Canary Wharf station holds its own.
