This still life explores the dynamic interplay of reflection, distortion, and texture. The copper tumbler and brass pot, with their highly polished surfaces, capture and transform the colors around them, subtly bending the shapes of the cherries and their surroundings. The five cherries, rich in hue and ripeness, offer a contrast to the metallic sheen, their deep bloom standing out against the cooler tones of the table and the dark background. The composition guides the eye naturally, with the cherry and its curved stalk at the bottom right acting as a visual entry point. Light plays a central role, emphasising the reflective nature of the objects and the way they echo and reshape the forms within the scene.

There are ideas of containment and freedom here. The need to run and the need to remain. The support of friendship and also of trusting an inner strength and certainty about what is right.The hutch behind the figures is a memory of one made by the artists father for rabbits. The animal is however, a hare. Hares do not thrive in captivity. They have much ancient symbolism attached to them and represent fertility, luck, quickness, cunning and faithfulness. There is an ecco here of 17th Century still life but this hare appears to be leaping over the girls shoulder or is perhaps part of her.

This painting looks at ideas around habit and addictive behaviour. What we take into our body and the things we crave, the pleasure and the damage which these things can do to us. It is also about the ritual of these habits . The print brings to mind the head of the opium poppy. We see the lungs of the racing dog, an organ which interacts physically with the air and which brings into the body the oxygen of life as well as particles of smoke and pollen, sent and pollution.

At the centre of the painting stands a contemporary woman, calm and self-possessed. Her vertical hair rises like a cypress or column, evoking growth and quiet authority. Surrounding her are figures drawn from Persian miniature painting, seated in intimate conversation. Once confined to manuscript pages, they now inhabit the same luminous gold space, dissolving boundaries between past and present. Their gathering suggests continuity through dialogue, memory, hope and shared presence. Power here is neither aggressive nor isolated; it is sustained, collective, and enduring. Fish move across the surface, referencing their deep symbolism in Persian culture as signs of fertility, life, blessing, joy, and go, “The central figure does not stand alone; she stands within an uprising.”

History reveals our limitations and capacities, exposing the recurring patterns that shape human behavior. In the rise and fall of civilizations, we see that no culture is absolute or eternal. History is humanity’s collective memory; without it, we lose our grounding. Through it, we understand where we stand and where we may be heading. In Persian tradition, the pomegranate symbolizes the sun and the warmth of life, the triumph of light over darkness. Its countless seeds within a single skin evoke unity and interconnectedness, while its expanding form suggests vitality and renewal. The soldier holding a spear references the “Immortals,” the elite guard of the ancient Persian Empire, symbolizing continuity and permanence, enduring structures that shape civilizations. Within this landscape, “woman” in ancient Persian culture transcends gender. She embodies continuity of life and serves as guardian of cultural memory, resilience, and collective identity.

There are many representations of the classical work of Amphitrite all over the world, most notably at the Louvre of Amphitrite with a dolphin. I revisit this environmental theme, with Amphitrite holding a dead fish skeleton - full of `friendly floatees`. In 1992, a cargo ship was travelling from Hong Kong to Tacoma, WA with thousands of rubber bath toys and due to a severe storm lost its cargo into the Pacific Ocean. This event serves as a reminder that even small, seemingly harmless toys can have a global environmental impact when lost at sea. Marine pollution from lost cargo, plastics, and consumer goods can persist for years, traveling vast distances and causing long-term damage to ocean ecosystems. The toxic effects of these pollutants impact on feeding patterns, growth and reproductive systems of aquatic species. Therefore, humans are exposed to these pollutants through the consumption of seafood, fish and crustaceans.

I began with an application of cadmium yellow acrylic - this gives future applications of colour a certain glow and allows me to scratch back to reveal elements of yellow as the painting progresses, both unifying the work and giving flashes of brightness and interest. Next I laid down the main lines and shapes of the composition in black acrylic and created areas of pattern and texture, and then added areas of Yellow Ochre acrylic and combed through to create pattern and texture. Over this framework I applied a limited palette of thinly applied oil and cold wax, in masked off bands and geometric shapes, giving the painting structure and a definite form, but endeavouring to retain some of those earlier marks. As I built up the layers I constantly scratched back to reveal earlier layers, also providing textural interest.

I began with an application of bright pink tinted gesso onto canvas. The pink gives future applications of colour a certain glow and allows me to scratch back to reveal elements of pink as the painting progresses, both unifying the work and giving flashes of warmth and interest. Next I laid down the main lines and shapes of the composition in Paynes grey oil and cold wax, working thickly and creating areas of texture - particularly along the treeline and the ridges of the dunes and beach using a variety of tools: brush, palette knife, combs and rollers. Next I built up the vegetation and banks of sand in the foreground with bands of oil and cold wax, constantly scratching back to reveal earlier layers and and picked up the previously laid down texture with a roller to create the effect of the sand. Finally I incorporated different grades of sand into the oil and cold wax mix to give greater texture and interest to the areas of sand in the foreground.

I have always loved painting sunflowers. This painting used for reference a small sketch I had already made of a sunflower that was on the cusp of ‘turning’ . In the picture I placed it in a favourite blue mug that used to be my mother’s. I set the still life somewhere on an imagined beach in southwest Cornwall (where I regularly spend time). I often include flattened contrasting patterns and textures in paintings in a way that reflects my love of collage and enjoyment in painting and drawing detail.

This still life is an integration of images of imagined vessels and a real life pot of my own. The table and background are also partly imagined and partly painted from life. How the foreground and background interlock with each other as some sort of designed space also felt important. The work of many of the mid-century British modernists is often in my mind. The composition evolved via the painting of the two central objects and their contents. As often in my work, I wanted the background to hint at a distant horizon without being too literal. Flying birds are suggested in a morning mist, and I enjoyed making the sky a textured pattern of interlocking shapes.

'Coffee in St Ives'

Looking into St Ives harbour from the stone wall, at high tide the sea pulls itself right into the two old stone arches at the inner end of the harbour wall. Taking in the colour and texture of the wave-beaten stone and the activities along Smeaton's Pier, I made drawings and took photos of the harbour at different times of day and this painting grew out of one of those sketches. I wanted to simplify the picture by painting in the bold shapes of the arches, flattening the shape and form of the sea and just suggesting the lines of the buildings that sit around the harbour. It became a series of interlocking shapes inspired by the strong lines and colour contrasts in the scene. The mug had belonged to my mother and I liked the vivid yellow of its stripe. It also provides a foreground focus to the picture. Although the background is mainly painted, the still life element in the foreground is made up of collage and paint.

Fast-fashion waste from the Global North washes up on Accra’s beaches every day in a tide of discarded textiles. This painting honours the quiet, steady courage of community initiatives and those who refuse to look away— returning again and again to lift tangled masses of clothing from the sand. Working in teams, they clear waste that should never have reached these shores, evidence of a global system that offloads its excess to places least able to bear it. Their persistence restores a measure of dignity to the beach, even knowing the next tide will bring more pollution. ‘Heroes’ pays tribute to these everyday heroes, recognising them not as victims, but as active agents holding their ground—and invites us to consider who is truly doing the work of care in a damaged world, and why they must do it at all.

This species is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The species was up-listed from Near Threatened to Critically Endangered in 2015 owing to severe targeting by hunters, illegal wildlife trade and deforestation/habitat loss. Numbers are expected to decrease further due to the value placed on the solid horn casque. China is the biggest consumer of the casques, which are often carved for decorations. It is estimated that thousands of birds are lost annually. They are native to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Conservation and research actions have been proposed to prevent illegal hunting and support livelihoods in forest communities, so that the incentive to poach is minimised.

The kakapo is the world's only flightless, nocturnal, and lek-breeding parrot. It is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Due to intensive conservation, the population has increased from around 50 in the 1990s to approximately 236–252 (as of 2024-2025). All are managed on predator-free islands in New Zealand. Decline is due to introduced predators (cats, stoats, rats), hunting, low genetic diversity, low reproduction rates and disease.

The painting captures Reeves in the moments before delivering her first Budget in 2024. Depicting the United Kingdom’s first female Chancellor after more than 800 years of male predecessors, the painting marks a pivotal moment in British political history, as the Treasury becomes the last of the great Offices of State to be led by a woman. The Chancellor is shown rehearsing with advisers, her speech laid out before her, with the iconic red Budget box behind her and a subtle chequered motif referencing the historic origins of the Exchequer — underscoring the continued progress of women in politics. My work is intended to be a contemporary history painting, capturing a defining moment for women’s equality in British political history. I wanted to create a work which reflected both the weight of historic lineage and captured a significant first for women’s leadership and representation in UK politics. The species is considered in danger of extinction due to rapid population declines over the last 50 years.

Angela and I used to meet every week in Hengrove Leisure centre while our children did after-school sports. We would chat, and work on our respective businesses. The cafe was always full of parents, carers, and children. It overlooks the junior swimming pool. We were always surrounded by other adults snatching a bit of email/phone/marking time while their children were in the pool. It struck me that this is a typical place where industry now happens, especially for those with young families. I livestreamed a lot of the painting process, including an interview with Angela, all available on my YouTube channel. (That recording has a deeply personal value to me now, as my very dear friend Angela died recently). At my invitation, several followers sent me images of their family members to include in the painting.
